Through its nationwide post office network, An Post already provides one of Ireland's largest and most accessible over-the-counter cash and banking service networks, supporting customers, businesses and communities in both rural and urban Ireland.
The 870 strong post office network plays a critical role in ensuring people can continue to access and lodge cash, carry out everyday financial services and receive face-to-face service close to home. Cash remains an important payment method for many households, businesses, charities and community organisations, An Post continues to provide reliable and convenient access through its nationwide network.
An Post's network is particularly important in areas where traditional banking services have reduced. Approximately 530 post offices operate in locations with no bank branch within 5 kilometres, while around 370 post offices have no bank branch within 10 kilometres.
An Post’s Director of Retail Brendan Moran said "The Central Bank's new cash access measures underline the continuing importance of cash in communities across Ireland. Through our nationwide network of post offices, An Post is already providing convenient, secure and trusted access to cash services every day. For many communities, particularly in rural areas, the local post office is a vital financial service hub. We remain committed to supporting customers and businesses with accessible face-to-face banking services."
Customers can access banking services through post offices six days a week, with queue times of under five minutes for more than 90 per cent of transactions. Typical opening hours are from 9.00am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays, offering greater convenience than many traditional bank branches.
For local businesses, clubs and charities, post offices provide a convenient and secure location to lodge cash and coin, often reducing the need to travel long distances to reach a bank branch. In many parts of the country, the local post office is already the nearest face-to-face cash service point.
